Ascension Day

The Ascension by Brian Jekel

Today is a public holiday in Germany.  40 days after Easter Sunday and thus always on a Thursday, it marks the day Jesus Christ ascended into heaven.  There are masses held in the Catholic churches (not sure about all the Lutheran ones) but ALL the churches ring their bells for about 1/2 hour at 10 AM.  It is a wonderful sound.  Listen to German bells here and then imagine 20 or 30 churches ringing their bells all at the same time.

BTW, it is hard to find a good painting of the Ascension.  Either the artist leaves out Christ entirely (as Harry Anderson did in this painting you all know) or He is accompanied by a whole host of angels with wings or, worse yet, by putti, baby angels with wings that many call cherubs.  It is just wrong, wrong, wrong, even if the painting is by Rembrandt!

So, go find some bells and celebrate the Ascension of Jesus Christ.
