Steve and Rachel Visit: Frankfurt Zoo in the Rain

I had promised E. that we would take the U-Bahn and go to the zoo to celebrate his birthday, so of course, it rained.  We went anyway, because that is what you do in Germany (and Ohio, for that matter!  It prepared us well for this weather)

The Zoo U Bahn station is fun to see.

The Frankfurt Zoo is OLD.  Founded abut 1874 and it is right in town.  That limits it somewhat, but it is so convenient to get to.

L liked the giraffes.

We saw the usual big animals.

Lots of different kinds of apes and monkeys

The rhino kept trying to lift a log blocking the gate.  Apparently, he knows the way out.

E says they have two hump camels in Qatar as well and the one-hump racing camels.

But most of the photos are of The Birds.  Lots of Birds.

The girls were fascinated.

This bird kept pecking at their hands, which they loved.

This male got really protective of his female when the zoo keeper entered to clean the cage.

Make yourself as BIG and threatening as possible.

The female just stood there with that "deer in the headlights" look.

Egyptian Ibis

Peacockish head feathers

Peacock on top of the cage

New Zealand Kea

"

"It vas der birds.  It vas der birds!"   That is for MaryBeth and Jill.

A especially liked watching the penguins swim.  Plus, by then the rain had stopped and the day got HOT and the penguin exhibit was cool.

Vulture

Fat, big green frog.

Lots of lizards

We ate our lunch at this fun playground.

Big enough for the whole family

Blackberries are in season: E finds and eats them EVERYWHERE

Time to go home : other side of the tracks

But not straight home : McD's is right at the Konstablerwache bus stop. . . .

And the LEGO store is just down the Zeil.  They had changed out the bricks to play with, so this time A&E built racing hot-dog . . . .

. . .  and ice cream trucks.  LOTs of hot dogs and ice cream.

A motorized train is lots of fun

Bill Watterson would be disappointed.  Apparently, copyrights only go so far. . . .

We finished our trip with a stop at the REWE grocery store in the basement of the mall and headed home in the rain.
